Goan food is mouth watering and simply amazing. It sets the taste buds on fire. The varied use of spices and influence of European flavours, makes Goan food yum and unique.
Goan food has spread all over India. There are many popular Goan dishes. Some you must have tasted and others you must have just heard about. Here are listed just some of them.
• Goan Fish Curry - A popular version is the Ambot-Tik which is sour and spicy. It uses petals of ‘Kokum solam’ which gives it the sour flavour. Other ingredients include grounded coconut, red chillies, tamarind, dried mango and lots of spices.
• Goan Prawn Curry - The prawns are cooked in a coconut milk. It is one of the most popular dishes of Goa.
• Recheado - It is of Portuguese origin. A whole pomfret or mackerel is stuffed with Recheado paste, which gives it a tangy flavour.
• Chicken Cafreal - It is also of Portuguese origin. It uses rum, vinegar and lots of spices. The sauce is reminiscent of peri-peri sauce.
• Pork Vindaloo - The pork is made with vinegar and potatoes. It is spicy and usually had with rice.
• Rava Fried Fish - Rava means semolina. In this the fish is marinated with spices, covered with semolina and fried.
• Chicken Xacuti - It is spicy and has a tangy, pungent curry. Not just chicken but lamb, mutton and fish can also be used.
• Pork Sorpotel - It is traditionally made for Christmas by Goan Catholics. It uses lots of spices and generous splashes of toddy vinegar. It is said to taste best after 3-4 days of preparation.
• Goan Nevri - Also called 'karanji'. These are sweet dumplings made of flour, coconut, sugar, cardamom, poppy seeds and more. It is generally made during Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali.
• Bebinca - This a popular Goan dessert. It is basically a stack of coconut pancakes which are baked one by one. Usually 16 layers are made but can be made with less layers too.
