The Various Types of Sea Food in India

India is a land of diversity and this is seen everywhere, especially in food. There is a huge variety of Sea Food in India. To know more about it, just read on.

India has such variety of food, that each state has its own different cuisine. Even within states, the food changes! If we talk about Sea Food in India, there is a lot to be found. Almost every state has its own twist on seafood, be it the Amritsari fish of Punjab or the prawn curries of Goa.

Goan cuisine is a blend of Portugese, Arabic and Indian flavours. This is reflected in their sea food dishes. Use of kingfish, pomfret, tiger prawns, mussels, tuna, squids is popular, along with great use of chillies and spices. Goan fish and prawn curries are quite famous.
In Punjab the primary seafood used is fish. Amritsari fish is a huge favourite.

In Odisha seafood is very popular in day to day food. People use fish, shrimp and crabs.
Use of fish is predominant in West Bengal. Fish is prepared in many ways - it is steamed, braised and stewed. There is a lot of use of chillies and mustard oil in the preparation.
Tripura uses a wide variety of sea food in its cuisine -  fish, turtle, shrimps, frogs and crab.
Mizoram too uses fish in its dishes. A popular dish is called 'bai', which is made by boiling vegetables. The non-vegetarian version of it uses fermented fish.
Manipur uses many types of sea food - fish, crabs and eels. They use a lot of fermented dry fish, locally called 'ngari', in their daily dishes.
The Malawani cuisine a variety of red and green fish, prawns and crabs. They make shellfish curries called 'mashacha sar'. The types of fish that they use includes - surmai, bangada, stone fish, Bombay duck, pomfret, karali and so on. They use dried fish in many curries.
The coastal state of Kerala also utilizes a lot of sea food in its everyday meals- Sardines, King fish, Pomfret, Mackerel, Prawns, Sole fish, anchovy, crab, squids, Mussels, oysters, and scallops.
As seen above, the coastal and North eastern states are the primary consumers of Sea Food In India.
